Well known from ouzo, the traditional Greek aperitif, anise also called aniseed is a plant native to the eastern Mediterranean region and Southwest Asia. Anise is sweet and very aromatic, with a very characteristic flavour. The seeds, whole or ground, are used in a wide variety of ethnic confectioneries. Petit Grecs have combined it with pistachio from the Greek island of Aegina, considered to be among the finest pistachios in the world.
